15 years ago I struggled with marketing my own local business. It's one of the very few things that have ever kept me up at night.

I knew there had to be some sort of formula but for the life of me I couldn't figure it out. Ended up traveling all over the world to figure out how this whole marketing thing actually worked.

When I was in Chicago I talked to a guy doing well scaling local businesses. He had a simple formula. Was willing to share it as well because -in his words- 'everyone that hears it says that it makes sense... but no one actually takes the time to do it'.

It's one of those things you can sketch on the back of a napkin. That's exactly what he did. I wish I would have kept that piece of paper, would make for a nice prop.

Anyway, the guy wrote down:

Offer + audience + medium = more sales

Put together a solid offer.

Find a way to reach your target audience.

Pick a medium to spread your message.

Do that, tinker with these components parts, and you'll kill it with your local business.

I went back and did exactly this. Took me about a year to get all the parts together. And that tripled my business.

It was incredible. All of a sudden I fixed the feast or famine problem. I never ran out of leads. If I needed more leads I would just open the faucet a little bit more and voila - we were off to the races again.

And today, 15 years later, I STILL use this formula. Because it works.

Has worked for 5000 years. Will work for the next 5000 years.

P.S. I know this was 15 years ago because my first son was born right around that time. I'm writing this from a hospital room waiting for the birth of my third son today. Things have changed drastically but marketing is still very much the same.

Figure out an offer, reach the right audience, make it easy for them to say yes, sell more product.

Has been the same for 5000 years and it'll still be the same 5000 years from now.
