Hi,

First time I visited Romania (couple years ago) I tried to get an Uber.

Found out that you couldn't get an Uber at the airport. So I was forced to take a regular taxi to my hotel.

Drive takes about 15 minutes. We arrive, taxi driver turns around and says: "600".

Quick aside - in the Romanian service industry they don't really say 'please'. On a subsequent trip I took my wife to dinner and a waitress literally tossed the menu at us while sneering. Eastern Europeans are built different.

Anyway, I do some quick math and figure out that he's charging me $135.

Tell him: "bro, come onnnnn now"

Don't get me wrong, I was fully expecting a scam. This is Romania and I'm in a taxi. I get it.

But the sheer size of the amount was just too much. Felt like a Somalian daycare level scam.

Anyway, when he notices me pushing back he immediately loses the ability to speak any English. Starts muttering and mumbling gibberish instead.

Ended up paying him 200lei. That's like $45. Still a ridiculous price.

His English suddenly returned after he took the money. Romanian cab drivers are built different.

All of this is a long winded way for me to tell you that I HATE haggling over prices. Just feels annoying and slimy.

So whatever I do I communicate price early, in writing, without weasel clauses or hidden costs or anything like that. Saves everyone a lot of hassle. Would recommend everyone to at least consider this model.

The more vague and opaque your pricing formula is, the higher the odds of you getting into discussions and negotiations about money. And life is too short for any of that.

Agree on a price. Stick to it. This is the way.

P.S. In case anything about this was triggering - yes, I'm aware there is now Uber at the Romanian airport. I'm also aware not every Romanian is rude. Whenever I say something about any country I get messages from people in that country so just know that I'm generalizing to make a point.
