Ever tried running Google ads?

Once you get them working they are GREAT. But the process to get them working?

That is a complete nightmare.

It feels like Google fired their user experience team in 2016 and the engineering department said: "don't worry about it, we'll handle this!"

And now? Now you can't find anything, everythings takes 7 clicks to get anywhere, reports are borderline unusable.

It's about as intuitive as brewing beer using a recipe that's in ancient Sumarian.

Especially if you've not worked with Google ads at all in the past.

My oldest son is a history buff. Loves to play strategic historical games.

One day he tried to explain "Hearts of Iron 4" to me.

I gave it a try. And found out that it was impossible.

"How do you attack?" "You can't, you need to build your army first"

So I click some buttons. Go through menus. Finally it seems like I'm building an army. Go to the next turn. Click more things.

I am utterly confused and befuddled. And it looks like I'm losing the second world war. This is not good.

"Ow, there's some ships coming at us. How do I destroy them?" "Well... you can't. Because you lost your own fleet 4 turns ago." "What!? How did that happen?!" "Well obviously you should have checked your Naval menu!"

My son looked at me like David Attenborough looks at that orangutan trying to hammer in a nail unsuccessfully.

That's exactly how Google ads feel the first time you try it.

Best advice I can give you is twofold:

1) Keep it simple, start with a search campaign, ignore everything else. Will give you a feel for the platform. Branch out from there over the next few weeks.

Or, alternatively,

2) Ask an expert to help you run campaigns. Could be me, could be another expert, but someone that has lived and breathed in that space for a while speeds up the process by leaps and bounds.

Google ads are awesome and I'd highly recommend them. I just hope that one day Google puts in place an actual UX team. They're a multibillion dollar company, should be doable.
